Are You Leaving Your Family a Scavenger Hunt?

Contents

We are. Or we were.

Bills, passwords, insurance policies scattered across three email accounts, a filing cabinet, and that one drawer we don’t talk about. The mortgage stuff is…somewhere. The login for the water bill? God only knows.

If something happened to us tomorrow, our boys would spend months playing detective. And we’ve watched that movie before. We don’t want to add that stress to their lives.

The Reality of Closing an Estate

We’ve had loved ones pass. And every single time, it’s the same story.

The grief is hard enough. But then there’s the logistics. Hunting for account numbers. Trying to cancel subscriptions you didn’t know existed. Calling twelve different companies with twelve different passwords.

And the certified death certificates. Oh, the certified death certificates. You need approximately 47 of them. For everything. Forever.

It’s exhausting. It’s overwhelming. And it’s completely avoidable. Well, most of it, except those death certificates. Seriously, get more than you think you will ever need.

We don’t want that to be someone’s memory of us. Digging through junk drawers at 2 am, sobbing over utility bills they can’t cancel because they don’t have the account information.

We want to leave memories. Not a mess.

Enter: The NOKBOX

A friend mentioned it casually —shoutout to Jan —and I ordered it before the conversation ended. It took me a few months to open it, but I’m tackling it now.

The NOKBOX (Next of Kin Box) is stupidly simple: 15 labeled folders for everything someone would need if we weren’t here to explain it. Finances. Insurance. Passwords. Pets. Each one has a two-sided checklist. One side tells you what to include, the other tells your person what to do with it.

It’s organized. It’s calm. It makes an impossible task feel possible.

I opened ours last week and started with Primary Residence (mortgage, utilities, the boring stuff). Twenty minutes in, I felt this weird sense of peace. I feel like I’m drawing a family map for our boys instead of leaving a riddle for them to figure out.

Let’s Make This Weird Together

Here’s the truth: this is easy to put off. Life gets busy. The box sits on a shelf. You forget about it.

So let’s not.

Order a box. Pour something (coffee, wine, spite, your choice). Pick one folder. Take a photo. Text me (if you know me), tag me on social. Or email me.

We’re doing this like it’s a book club, except the book is “All The Important Stuff” and nobody’s pretending they read ahead.

I’m checking in with everyone who joins. We’ll walk through this together. One folder at a time, zero pressure, maximum sticky notes.

👉 Get your NOKBOX here (We got the Base Box. Comes with everything printed and ready to go. There’s also a Lite version if you want to DIY it, and a Fireproof Box if you’re fancy.)

Full disclosure: That’s an affiliate link. I may get a small commission if you buy, but we’re recommending this because we actually use it and genuinely believe in it.

The Box Isn’t For You

It’s for them.

For your partner sorting through grief fog at 2 am.
For your kids who shouldn’t have to play detective.
For whoever loves you enough to handle your mess.

Make it not a mess.

💛 Leave memories, not a mess.
📥 Tell me you’re in. I’ll save you a spot in our little accountability circle.
