How Audible Became My Daily Companion — And Why I Think You’ll Love It Too

Contents

I’ve been an Audible member since 2020, and my library is now just shy of 300 titles. That’s not a flex (okay, maybe a little) — it’s more of a reflection of how deeply integrated audiobooks have become in my daily routine. I’ve already listened to 35 titles in the first three months of 2025 alone. When I say I’m always listening to something, I mean it.

Where Audiobooks Fit Into My Life

I don’t run anymore (aging sucks), but Audible is there for me during long walks with the dogs, yard work, cleaning the house, driving around town, and even while I’m baking. It’s like background music, except it’s a story I want to hear.

Not Just Fiction

While I love a good fiction book (and can’t wait to write more about some of my favorites), my library isn’t all fiction. I regularly listen to leadership books, productivity tips, mindset guidance, and personal development titles. There’s something powerful about learning and growing while doing the laundry — and I plan to write more about some of those titles soon.

Yes, Libby is Great — But…

I also use Libby, the free audiobook platform tied to public libraries, and it’s a fantastic option. But let’s be honest: the waitlists for popular titles can be long. Like, “You’ll get this book by next season” long. I’m just not patient enough. When I want a book, I want to start listening now — not next month. That’s part of why Audible has remained my go-to. I can browse, download, and press play right away.

Why Audible Hits Different

The other reason? The quality. The narrators on Audible are genuinely excellent — some books even feature an entire cast with different voices for different characters, which adds a whole new dimension to the experience. It’s like watching a movie in your head while pulling weeds, decorating for the holidays, or simply folding clothes. Now, granted, my children are now young adults and don’t live at home, so I don’t have small children to contend with while listening.

Plus, Audible’s features make it easy to listen your way:

  1. Adjust playback speed
  2. Set sleep timers
  3. Clip your favorite quotes
  4. Explore exclusive Audible Originals

Why Audible Works for Me

Aside from the vast library, Audible offers:

  1. Outstanding narration — sometimes with full casts and distinct character voices
  2. Free content — including a growing selection of podcasts, meditations, and free titles
  3. User-friendly features — like sleep timers, speed (1.6, for me) controls, and bookmarking, to name a few

It’s a platform you can personalize — for fun, focus, or personal growth.

If You’re Thinking About Trying It…

If you’ve never tried Audible, there’s a free 30-day trial (with a free audiobook of your choice) worth checking out. You can start with something fun, smart, or a little of both — like Lessons in Chemistry, which I highly recommend.
