Why Blueberry Season is My Personal Paradise (And Why I Might Be the International Blueberry Ambassador)

Contents

Every year, just as the Georgia heat starts humming and the days stretch out with golden, sticky sunlight, a very special time arrives, blueberry season. And not to brag, but I consider myself something of an International Blueberry Ambassador. (The title is self-appointed, but honestly, it feels right.)

Blueberries are my favorite fruit. Period. They are summer’s candy, nature’s tiny masterpieces, and the one snack that never, ever lets me down. Sweet, juicy, and so easy to pop by the handful, they remind me of all the best parts of this season: simplicity, sweetness, and sunshine. I eat so many during peak season that I’m reasonably sure I’ve developed a permanent blueberry tint, inside and out. If I ever start radiating a faint indigo glow, know it’s from living my truth.

My blueberry haven of choice? DGD Farms at Hadden Estate. It may be known more as a dreamy wedding venue (and believe me, it’s gorgeous), but to me, it’s all about the blueberries. They grow three varieties, each bursting with flavor and love, and I would happily pick them by the gallon. Which, for the record, I do.

Opening day at DGD Farms is a holiday on my calendar. I show up early with my own bucket (because a true Blueberry Ambassador comes prepared), wearing my trusty rain boots, because wet feet in shoes are the enemy of joy, and earbuds playing a good audiobook. But truthfully, the best soundtrack is the morning breeze and the occasional birdcall as I wander the rows. It’s equal parts peaceful ritual and joyful hunt.

Once the bucket is full and my fingers are stained telltale indigo, I know the real magic begins. Because nothing kicks off a beach vacation like a cooler full of fresh blueberries. It’s tradition. When our feet hit the sand, the berries come out, and summer has suddenly begun.

Blueberry bushes are part of the local landscape around here. In addition to DGD Farms, I enjoy visiting Miller’s Blueberry Farm and Whippoorwill Blueberry Farm. It’s not uncommon to find a neighbor with a backyard patch proudly showing off their bounty. It’s one of those quiet, beautiful things about Georgia living: how food and community grow.

And if you really want to see Georgia’s blueberry devotion on full display, look no further than the Georgia Blueberry Festival in Alma. I’ve been, and let me tell you, it’s a berry lover’s dream. The town celebrates our favorite fruit with charm, flavor, and plenty of Southern hospitality. And while you’re in Alma, don’t miss a stop at The Blueberry Barn. It’s one of my absolute favorite places, packed with local goodies, blueberry-inspired treats, and special small-town magic that makes you want to stay a little longer.

So, here’s to the blueberry season, too sweet mornings in the orchard, rain boots and buckets, festivals that honor the humble berry, and the first bite that tells you summer is here. And if anyone wants to make my Blueberry Ambassador title official, I’ll be over here, championing the cause one ripe berry at a time.

Long live the blueberries. πŸŒΏπŸ’™
